We are Georgia Lions!

Lions Clubs International celebrated recently its first 100 years of service around the world, Georgia Lions look forward to our own centennial celebrations to take place in 2020.  This will be the date when the first Lions club was chartered in Atlanta, Georgia on December 17, 1920 .

From the North Georgia mountains to the South Georgia coast, Lions have been making a different in the lives of those throughout the State in so many ways.  As Lions we pride ourselves on the work we have achieved in the fight against blindness.  Georgia has answered that call over the years by partnering with some of the biggest names in healthcare and creating foundations that are built to last.  For example, in 1948 the Georgia Lighthouse (known as the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation) was formed.  In 1963 the Georgia Eye Bank was created and remained a Lions project until 1997, when the Children’s Eyecare Center at Emory was created.  In 1968, Lions of Georgia sponsored the first Peach Bowl game in Atlanta to benefit the Lighthouse.  This tradition continues today as we proudly in both the Kickoff Classic and the Peach Bowl.

Georgia is also proud of its leaders.  In 1953, future U.S. President Jimmy Carter, joined the Plains Lions Club. He rose quickly to the top of the club and his district.  He and other family members remain Lions to this day and he continues to serve others throughout the World.

We have also been proud to have one of our own Lions ascend to the position of International President – James Ervin  who remains an active member of our Georgia Lions as well as the International board. We are proud of our Georgia Lion Judge Haynes H. Townsend who lost to an UN-timely death too soon.Who was  currently serving as International First Vice President.

Georgia opens its doors and invites people from around the world to experience the history, culture and beauty of both the old and new South. Visitors will find that Georgia offers the best places for any lifestyle, including a prominent, international city to do business, genteel Southern plantation towns to relax, picturesque mountains to explore or pristine beaches to play.  From the mountains to the sea, Georgia has it all! Georgia is one of the few places that celebrates four full seasons; a brilliant display of color in the Fall, a chilly but not unbearable Winter season, a bright, green Spring with varieties of floral color and a hot Summer made for time spent in and on the water.

Visitors discover the rich heritage of the state in the nostalgic towns that lie between the Appalachian Mountains and the Okefenokee Swamp. Don’t forget to stop and sample the tastes of the region like sweet tea, cornbread, black-eyed peas, barbecue and peach pie in one of the locals’ favorite spots. No matter where you visit in Georgia, Georgians will greet you with a true dose of Southern hospitality.

Listed in these pages are some of the online resources of the Lions of Georgia.  Be sure to visit often as more web sites are introduced and updated.  If you are a visitor from outside of the state, please plan to visit. Our clubs are eager to receive visitors – Lions and non-Lions and would love to share ideas of Serving others.
