Light the Path to YOUTH
Governor‘s Comments...
What a great Organizational Meeting! We had 35 clubs represented with at least 135 Lions in attendance. I really think we had several moving around so much that we could not get an accurate count and that there were at least 140. Whatever the exact number, I THANK YOU for being present and for discovering two new Lion friends. Continuing communication will reap its rewards. Both for our district and for us personally, you can count on it!
The new Collins Lions Club will have its Charter Night on September 8th. When the plans are completed, you will receive more information. In the meantime, contact Guiding Lion Rommie Thompson, 912-739-3455 about what your club may do to provide the Collins Club with a head start. One suggestion for a gift is a road sign that announces the location and time of the club meetings. There are several highways leading into Collins.
Last month I reported that Int. Pres. J. Frank Moore’s, III theme for the year was: Light The Path to Service. He has identified four special areas for concentration this year.
The first is “ Light the Path to Youth” and he has declared this Lions year to be The Year of Youth for our Association. It is certainly no secrete that we have fallen down in the recruitment of younger members, but that is not what Lighting the Path to Youth is about. It is about providing service to young people through our existing Lions Programs, and to develop new ways to reach out and touch their lives for the better. We have several programs designed to provide today’s children with the certain knowledge that there are Lions in their area who care for them and are able and ready to lend a helping hand.
The first and one of the most productive is LEO CLUBS. Here in District 18-B we are in last place in the State regarding Leo Clubs. In reality, Leo Clubs are Lions Clubs composed of middle or high school students, which perform the same type of service we do, but on the scale and level appropriate to their time, finances and age. Leo Clubs have the potential of teaching kids the responsibility and the joy of serving those in need. They also have the potential of building future Lions and involving the parents as possible members by educating them about Lions through their children’s involvement. In addition, Leo Clubs build stronger Lions Clubs because of the moral requirement to provide them an example. Contact District Leo Chair, PDG Jim Ward (912) 764-3233 for more information or DG Jack.
Lions Quest is a character education program, which is designed to be incorporated into virtually any curriculum. While it may be lamentable that so many of today’s school children do not receive such education elsewhere, the facts show they do not. If Lions Quest can right that omission then we have most likely saved a child from prison, drug addiction or some other path which ruins their lives and negatively impacts society. We have Quest trained teachers in most school systems in Georgia and have Lion Gus Furlong, the State Youth Outreach Chair, (770) 478-3844 who is certified to train more. The school systems, which use the Lions Quest program, report a significant improvement in the overall conduct of the student body. Talk with your school system today about the Lions Quest Program. Call Lion Gus or me for more information.
We have seen the Youth Exchange program in action already this year. Did you not enjoy meeting Laurie, from France at our Organizational Meeting? Did you not see what a great opportunity we have to cross the barriers of countries and language to gain a better understanding of other cultures AND to provide young people with that opportunity before they develop a mindset, which cannot be changed? Ask PDG Jim Davis and Lion Peggy if they are not the richer for having housed and gotten to know Laurie personally, and her family via e-mail. International Youth Camps are the same thing on a group scale and offer the chance to provide experiences with in a camp setting.
We also have The Peace Poster Contest, which engages young people in thinking about world peace and offers them an opportunity to use their artistic abilities.
The new program of recognizing outstanding Youth Leaders with the Lions Young leaders Service Award and the Young Ambassadors of the 21st Century Award is a wonderful way to say thank you to young people who may not hear thank you very often. It is also a way to Light the Path to Public Awareness. Both paths are important enough to deserve more space than is left this month so will be discussed next month.
On the District level I have been appalled at having received Activities Reports with the notation” no activities this month”. Surely this can’t be a Lions Club! A Lions Club whose motto is: WE SERVE!
In the first place every club should be having two meeting each month where the president, secretary and treasurer are performing at least minimum administrative services. Hopefully, there has been at least one program each month presented by a district officer or chairperson regarding one of the Lions of Georgia State Projects, or a program of interest and information from outside the Lions family. Surely there has been a committee report about the completion and results of a successful Club project, or, a report of the preparation and planning of the next scheduled Club project. At the very least there has been the reports from individual members regarding the community service they have performed for someone who needed help and was not able to obtain that help elsewhere. Perhaps a report of the number of hours of community service performed as a hospital volunteer or any number of other similar activities. Surely we do not have any Lions Clubs in District 18B whose members have not performed some service. If all we do is “meet and eat” we are not being true to the concept Melvin Jones had in mind when he said” that you can’t get anywhere in life until you do something for other people”. Mr. Jones did not have in mind doing something just one time!
Georgia’s own Past International President Jim Ervin did not envision us sailing his four ships just one time. International President J. Frank Moore, III does not envision us Lighting the Path to Service just one time and then quitting. WE SERVE is not a passive motto and it is not a past tense motto.
For Lions, WE SERVE is an ongoing, active, always changing to fit the needs, motto that defines and separates Lions Clubs from all the rest.
Be sure that your club reports all of its activities, and more importantly, be sure that your club lives up to our motto. It’s easy to get trapped into a static “state of club’ where you have one or two active projects which raise enough money for a club to participate in some projects and buy a few glasses, and then engage cruise control and let the rest of the year go by.
Well I’ll climb down from my soapbox and note that most of our clubs are not passive clubs on cruise control and also note that even District Governors are sometimes guilty of cruise control. I promise to disable my cruise control if you will!
On a positive and uplifting note, as I travel the District I continue to be amazed at how many good things Lions do! Though-out District 18B, most of our Lions provide service in innovative ways and with unselfishness and no thought of reward or recognition for himself or herself. Just one more reason “YOU MAKE ME PROUD TO BE A LION”

The Cabinet Secretary position in the District serves as the official recorder of the minutes at the District Cabinet Meetings. This Lions also files reports with Lions Clubs International about district activities. The Cabinet Secretary also assists the District Governor in communicating with the District. The Cabinet Treasurer serves the District in the capacity of Chief Financial Officer for the District. That Lion is empowered to collect dues from the clubs in the District and to dispense those funds according to the budget and the by-laws passed by the district. The Extension Committee is one of the most important in any District. This committee is made up of a chairman and as many members as needed . The objective is this committee is to cultivate the growth of the District through new Lions Clubs. Starting a new Lions Club can be a challenge, but often it can be a joy when a group of people come together in a cause for community service. There are many communities in our district that have no Lions Club. They are waiting for someone to take notice and ask them if they wish to form a club and serve their community. Next month our newest Lions Club, the Collins Lions Club will be chartered. This is the result of the hard work and dedication of both the Lions who are forming the club. The sponsoring Lions Club and the members of the Extension Committee. Serving this year as chairman of the Extension Committee is Lion Danny Fries, Sr. of the Rincon Noon Lions Club. Lion Danny’s hard work and dedication to the Lions Clubs in District 18-B have led to the formation of several Lions Clubs.

Georgia Lions Lighthouse
Foundation
The Georgia Lions Lighthouse provides vision and hearing services for Georgians who have no place to turn to for help. Your support of the Lighthouse makes this possible. The Lighthouse staff are always available to answer any questions that you may have and if necessary point you to the right person who has the answer. The phone number to the Lighthouse is 1(800) 718-SITE or 1(800) 718-7483
The Lighthouse has a web page at http://members.aol.com/galionlighthouse. Information about the Lighthouse, its history and current activities are available there. Application forms are also available for download.
S.E.E. is a top priority at the Lighthouse. S.E.E. can be summed up in this way. S= Services for vision and hearing. This is what we as Lions are committed to as our service to our community. E= Education. Education is the corner stone for serving. We need to educate both our fellow Lions and also the community that the Lighthouse is here to help. E= Endowment. Endowment is giving. Giving of Time, Talent, and Treasure are the three basic ingredients for a successful organization. The Lighthouse needs all three to be successful. Your time to plan and promote projects to support Lions Causes. Your talents or your abilities to make dreams come true. Each of us have different talents. Working together makes any dream a successful project.
Treasures is the funds that you raise for your causes. Without funding no project or activity can function for long. When you plan for your fundraising projects please keep the Lighthouse in your plans. The funds you send help make it possible for your Lighthouse to serve your and my communities. “Lions Help Restore Hope”
