Governor‘s Comments...

With sad heart I report the death of Lion Reverend Armand Bazemore, the father of PCC Stan Bazemore. Rev. Bazemore was a Baptist preacher and Pastor, a Prison Ministries preacher, a father, grandfather, a loving and caring husband and a good Lion. Beyond all of that, he was a true disciple of Jesus Christ. He will be missed by all who knew him, mourned by most, but no doubt, is already on another job of higher calling. District 18B will hold him in it’s collective memory and shall keep PCC Stan, Lion Betty Lou and all the family in our prayers and thoughts.

Another sad report is the death of PDG Sharlene Warren in District A. PDG Sharlene was probably less widely known in District 18B, but no less loved by those who knew her. Her courage and spirit in face of illness provides an example for us all. In Lions work we could find no better role model. District 18B shall also keep Lion Scott and her other family members in our thoughts and prayers.

Even closer to home and thus sadder for District 18B is the passing of PDG Bob Bovee on Sunday Nov.11, 2001. PDG Bob had been ill, fought back but in the end succumbed to illness. PDG’s Bob’s courage and resoluteness in the face of illness was an example of his outlook on life. Face the enemy, never back up and defeat the adversary one way or another. He has simply moved the site of battle. At this time in history we can find no better lesson or no higher ideal to follow. I have no doubt that PDG Bob is already training new Angels how to fly and how meet their responsibilities in Heaven’s ‘Blue Sky Forever’.

On a happier note, the District Rally in Reidsville was well attended with 85 Lions from 27 Clubs and several visitors. We got a great start on having fun with youngsters thanks to Lion Jennifer Eisenhart and son Matthew. I have four grand children who are still talking about Leo, the Lion. I hope VDG Jerry, hint, hint, hint will plan a similar type program for next year.

Of course PID Jay Patel brought an inspirational message. If you did not attend and hear him, ask someone to tell you the woodchoppers story! It can make a difference in your life and in our service as Lions. Thank you to all who took time to attend. Thank you to the Reidsville Club for their hard work in planning and hosting the Rally.

Congratulations to Lion Louis Keene who received an International President’s Certificate of Appreciation. Note to VDG Jerry. If you have a speaker at the Rally next year, DON’T ask him to say a few words in the afternoon if you plan a banquet later. Some Lions will think the program is over and leave! Please accept my apologies for poor planning. Actually, it worked out rather well in the end. Lion Louis Keene, of Woodbine, did not get his International President’s Certificate of Appreciation from PID Jay at the Rally. However I had the honor of presenting it to him in Woodbine, his home Club, which was more significant to Lion Louis in many ways. I can think of no Lion in this District who has done any more than Lion Louis from a caring and giving heart, with no thought of reward or acclaim. Congratulations, again, Lion Louis Keene!

You’ll recall me saying that we need to increase our communication and have more fun. Well if you have not been to the Golden Isles Steak Dinner at Benny’s Red Barn, you have missed communication and FUN! PDG Chris Barbieri is the ‘M C’ and everyone wins something. Lion Evelyn won a remote control car, which she thought would to be a present for a grandchild. No way! Have you ever played with a ‘really good’ remote control car? IT’S FUN! Sorry kids.

The next night Woodbine held their Steak Dinner and let the District Governor stay in the ‘pot’ until ticket number 96 was drawn. I think PDG Bobby set it up just to tease me. Again, it was great fun and raised a significant amount of money to be used for Lions projects.

If your Club has Peace Poster Contests participants, its time to judge them locally and then submit them to the DG and Lion Runette Davis, District Peace Poster Chair, for District judging. The entries must be postmarked by Nov. 15, 2001.

November is LCIF Contributing Member Month! Remember to report the number of contributing members on your activity reports. Only one Club made such a report for October! Don’t forget! The DG and VDG have Contributing Member receipts and pins available for immediate “purchase’. The pin is yours for a $20.00 contribution. A Silver Wreath is available for an additional $30.00 contribution and a Gold Wreath for an additional $70.00 contribution. The pins and wreaths are handsome additions to vests and jackets as well as being the symbol of your generous and caring heart.

Keep our nation and it’s leaders in your prayers. Keep up the great work you do as Lions. Have some new visions and create some new successes in District 18B. Remember the words of PID Jack Stuart. “If it is to be, it is up to me”. It is up to each of us! We are able to influence the outcome of all things by the way we adjust our attitude, which the only thing we are able to control directly. “If it is to be, it is up to me!”

Club Newsletter/Bulletin An effective communications tool. The primary purpose of the bulletin is to keep all club members informed of upcoming dates and activities, changes in membership and other timely information. A publication that is well written and easy-to-read is something members will look forward to each month. Some clubs choose to distribute their newsletters by e-mail or post it on the club's Web site for those with access to the Internet. Survey your club members to see what form of distribution works best for your club.

Tips for newsletter content:

Keep information relevant and timely

Highlight upcoming events and recap those that were recently completed

Recognize members' contributions, accomplishments, birthdays, membership anniversaries, etc.

Provide members' new or corrected addresses, phone/fax and e-mail

Include club facts or history

Insert relevant information from the district, multiple district and international, bringing a greater understanding to how the club's activities fit into the larger picture.

PR Tip
"The Ocean Shores Lions Club sends a copy of its monthly bulletin to the local newspapers. Often they seem to take information directly from it for the paper or call the bulletin editor to learn more. This does not take the place of a press release, but it does seem to be effective for us."

November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes is a disorder that affects millions of people world wide. It is a condition where the body has difficulty in processing sugars. Left untreated it is a leading cause of blindness, heart disease, kidney disease, limb amputation and yes, even death. Each November Lions Clubs International promotes Diabetes Awareness month. This is a time for all Lions Clubs to make the public aware of this disease and the need for screening and treatment. Diabetes can strike at any age or any race. There may be symptoms, in other cases there are not.

If you have family members who have had diabetes, you are at risk. If you have a frequent thirst or a frequent need to urinate. If you have leg cramps, or a continued tired feeling. You need to be tested immediately.

Even if you do not have family members with diabetes, it is wise to have a complete physical exam every year. That peace of mind of knowing is all important.

On a personal note, diabetes runs in my family. My father’s death was in part due to diabetes. My Mother is diabetic but it is under control. Several weeks ago I went in for my annual physical and was told, “There is good news and there is bad news.” The good news is your cholesterol is good, in fact it is low. The bad news is your sugar level is 241. You have diabetes. For a long time I knew that this day would come. I watched for the warning signs, but in my case the only sign was only fatigue. I am hopeful that I caught it early enough to prevent any long term effects. I have adjusted my diet to eliminate any unnecessary sugar. I have a glucose meter to check my sugar levels. I will be going to classes to learn what foods to eat. I am taking a oral medication to lower my blood sugar. I hope that by writing this article that I might make others aware of what diabetes is and the need to be tested. Diabetes Awareness is year round.
