Great Things are Accomplished when Lions and Mountains Meet.

Governor‘s Comments...

The International Association of Lions Clubs, Multiple District 18, held it’s annual State Convention on May 24-25, 2002 in Athens, Georgia. We had an outstanding Convention that included many new events. The Georgia Jamboree, featuring The Georgia Lions All State Band was first on Friday night. Throughout the day on Saturday there were seminars to attend as well as the usual business sessions. The seminars answered questions about publicity, becoming a District Governor and other topics. There was an old car display and activities for non-Lion spouses as well. Lions from all areas of Georgia were present so old friendships could be renewed and new ones formed. Our Multiple District hosted International Director, W. Allen Broughton as our keynote speaker. His wife, Lion Emily and their son, Brian, accompanied him. Lion Emily was gracious and charming to the degree that the Council o f Governors presented her with an “Honorary Georgia Peach’ proclamation.

Our own International Director, Buddy Ouzts and Lion Carolyn were present as was ‘Our President’ James Ervin. Georgia Past International Directors, Myers Banister, George P. Crumbley, Jr. and Dr. Don Schmidt were also in attendance . The Lions of Georgia also enjoyed the company of Fran Banister, Carolyn Crumbley and Elaine Schimdt at least as much as the PIDs. Actually, probably more.

Fun and fellowship abounded and many deserving Lions received awards. From District 18B DGE Jerry Kaiser received an International President’s Certificate of Appreciation. Lion Danny Fries received an International Presidents Leadership Award and PDG Charles (Chuck) Shurtleff received the prestigious International President’s Award. All were richly deserved. The recipients would be among the first to say that they were simply standing in the long line of dedicated, hard working 18B Lions. I have said it many times and in many ways this year. District 18B is ‘The Crème-de-la-Crème of Lionism.

As good as it was, there were a few things missing from the State Convention. Mainly, Lions from District 18B. On average we usually purchase about 135 hospitality books each year that results in around 150 attendees from 18B. This year we purchased 62 books! Our District was not alone as the number in attendance was off around 250.

Unless you actually experience it for your self, it is difficult to explain what you miss by failing to attend YOUR State Convention or Zone Meeting or Region Meeting or Cabinet Meeting. In addition to meeting and making new friends, you either learn many ways to be a better Lion, OR you teach others many new ways, or BOTH. There is also FUN to be found if you just look around.

If you recall going to Athens in the past, you’ll recall that the parking around the Classic Center is scarce. Lion Gloria Thompson walked from her hotel to the Classic Center, which is only three blocks at most. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but she walked with at least four different men before arriving at the meeting. Not including Lion Romie!

If I calculate correctly, I have one more article to write as your District Governor. I’ll save the good-byes and tears for that article. However let me say THANK YOU for the great response I have received and for the great works you have accomplished this year.

At the beginning of the year I hoped that by telling you how and why YOU MADE ME PROUD TO BE A LION, you would realize how very important you are to those in need.

DG Jack

SPECIAL REPORT

After touring The Carter Center with PIP James Ervin, the current International President, J. Frank Moore, III, will visit with the Lions of Georgia in conjunction with the first Council Meeting of the new Lions year.

He is making this special appearance in order to present a special award. Plans are under way to host President Frank at a banquet in the Dalton Civic Center, site of the 2003 State Convention on Friday evening, August ninth. All Lions of Georgia are invited to attend and see and hear President Frank who will then be the Immediate Past International President and the Chairman of Lions Clubs International Foundation.

Most probably the cost will be around a very reasonable $25.00 and reservations will be required. A near-by Marriot Courtyard will most likely be the ‘headquarters’ and rooms will be available around $60.00 plus taxes. The Council of Governors will hold the regularly scheduled Council Meeting on Saturday, the tenth, and Lions are always welcome.

To make reservations or to obtain additional information, contact DG Jack or DGE Jerry.

Know Your O's

How do an ophthalmologist, an optometrist and an optician differ? It's important to visit one or all three of these specialists for good eye health.

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who have done residencies in ophthalmology. They are licensed to give exams during which they routinely check for signs of eye disease by using dilating drops to carefully inspect the inside of the eye. Some specialize in specific eye conditions, such as glaucoma or cataracts, and perform surgery when needed.

Optometrists are independent primary health care providers who examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures, as well as diagnose related systemic conditions.

Opticians make corrective lenses and fit them into eyeglass frames, and they can help you select the best frames and give you information on bifocals. They also repair eyeglasses, and many can fill prescriptions for contact lenses. However, they're not trained to diagnose eye problems or prescribe medication.
