TO CREATE, TO PROMOTE, TO UNITE, TO ENCOURAGE, Leadership through Service as Lions

Governor‘s Comments...

MULES:

MANAGEMENT UTILIZING LEADERSHIP

EXCELLENCES

As we move farther down the trail and by the time this is printed I will have completed all my official visits to the 49 Lions Clubs in the District. I am proud to announce that our membership is at 1281 and that we are approaching my goal of 1300 members by July. With new members we have more hands for service to our communities. With the addition of new members comes the responsibility of developing them into becoming an effective Lions and future leaders.

This month I will add two more mules: The first, and this will be our eleventh mule, is our Lions Mentoring Program. The Lions Mentoring Program provides a mutually beneficial relationship where both the mentor and their protégé can learn, grow and reach their fullest potential together. The program’s objective is designed to form a bond between experienced, knowledgeable lions and those who wish to further develop their commitment to be a quality, highly effective member of their club, zone, region, district and the association. The center of Lions Mentoring Program focuses on you, the individual Lion, with a mentor working with you. Through a progress of four levels of accomplishment, the program guides your personal development as a Lion. Beginning as a new member and growing into areas of greater responsibility and capabilities through a period of time. As you advance through this program you will come to understand between the differences of being a Lion and becoming a Lion.

The second mule and the twelfth on our team is tail twister. You see an active club doing things and having fun and in most cases you will see and outstanding “tail twister” somewhere in that crowd of Lions. The duties of a tail twister is to promote harmony, good fellowship and enthusiasm at club meetings by doing some stunts and games and a judicious imposing of fines on fellow lions at club meetings. Fining members is a key element of a successful tail twister. But fining for funds only and not for fun is a terrible mistake. One of the primary tasks of the tail twister is to extract humor and laughter with jokes, puns, witticisms, mimicry, acting, singing or dramatizations. Laughter is universal, but the tail twister’s rostrum should never be used for insulting anyone. Care should be taken in promoting humor. The use of vulgar jokes is not compatible with the ethics of Lions Clubs International.

And as I close, we as a District have a great lion who has been doing this for a number of years, and doing it in a professional manner. Many thanks Past District Governor Chris for a job well done and in a tasteful manner.

God Bless and Y’al come to Claxton on the 22nd of this month for our 3rd Cabinet Meeting and our District Convention.

DG Jerry

LCIF Update

A small donation to LCIF makes a big difference. Did you know that a $20 donation to LCIF can restore a person's sight through cataract surgery, a $50 donation supports an eye exam in developing countries and a $100 donation can pay for an eye exam in a developed country? Please support LCIF by becoming a Contributing Member.

LCIF has several excellent PowerPoint presentations that explain what LCIF is and how it helps Lions help others. The presentations and speaker notes can be downloaded or sent to you on a CD-ROM. Please contact LCI or visit the website at http://www.lionsclubs.org

LCIF makes a difference in community after community.

Membership Key Program

Salute The Heritage . . . Reward the Effort

Steady, consistent recruitment efforts are essential to a club's continued success. New members help to reinvigorate a club, not only by providing more hands to help those in need, but also by providing fresh ideas, perspectives and enthusiasm. Membership Key Awards acknowledge the importance of effective recruitment in membership growth by recognizing the number of new members a Lion has sponsored.

Each of the 17 Membership Keys is designed to reflect the number of new members sponsored. Keys are automatically issued by International Headquarters, based on the Monthly Membership Report statistics submitted by club secretaries, with a sponsoring Lion appropriately credited after a new member has remained a Lion for a year and a day. Keys are issued not only for new members brought into existing clubs, but also for the sponsorship of members in newly chartered clubs.

Membership Key Awards

Each Key is a lapel pin with a clutch backing. For the Key of Nations (recognizing 100 members) and above, the lapel pins are complemented by a distinctive medallion and presentation ribbon.

Rules of Eligibility

A new member must remain a Lion for one year and a day before the name may be used as credit toward a key, to be issued during the 13th month; except where the sponsored member dies, transfers or moves from the community before the expiration of a year and a day.

In existing clubs the name of the new member and the sponsor must be reported on the Monthly Membership Report of the club with the sponsor's member number and club number.

In the case of charter members, the new charter member's name along with the sponsor's name, member number, club name and club number must be reported on the original Report of Charter Members and/or Additional Charter Member Reports which are submitted within the first 90 days following the club's charter date.

No sponsor shall receive more than one key of the same type.

Transfer and reinstated members cannot be used as credit for a key.

Only one sponsor can receive credit for a new member.
