LIONS MENTORING PROGRAM

BE A MENTOR!

Governor‘s Comments...

INNOVATION: GATEWAY TO OUR FUTURE

Throughout the year, I have attempted to cover INNOVATION. As the year nears to an end, we all need to look at what we have accomplished and what is ahead.

Our major Lions project—by major I mean not only for the Lions of District 18B and Georgia, but Lions the world over—is Lions Clubs International Foundation. LCIF is the grant-making arm of Lions Clubs International. It was established to accept donations from the family of Lions and others and use those funds to help meet crucial humanitarian needs of the worldwide community.

What exactly does it do for Lions: Well, it helps us respond to global problems such as the inoculation of children against diseases we often take for granted or funds to help prevent blindness. LCIF enables Lions to help others in times of disasters. We have received those funds for floods and tornadoes in our district. LCIF funds projects too big for districts to do on their own. LCIF had grant program for local needs.

LCIF has provided over 3 million cataract surgeries; treated over 36 million for river blindness; trained over 12,000 eye care professionals and over 54,000 village health workers. Disaster grants went to India for the major earthquake in 2001; the Honduras and Nicaragua for Hurricane Mitch damage; earthquake relief in Turkey; and enabled financial assistance to victims and families plus modular buildings for those helping in the recovery effort after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. A partnership with Special Olympics started the Opening Eyes program to provide vision screening and eyeglasses where needed. About 400 homes have been built with our partnership with Habitat for Humanity. The Lions SightFirst Project has funded children vision centers and programs in 25 countries. Did you know that a child goes blind in the world every minute, yet half of the conditions leading to the blindness can be prevented or treated?

What can you do to help? The next time you are asked to be an LCIF Contributing Member—do so. For only $20 per year, you can support the LCIF program. Is your club looking for a way to honor a Lion or non-Lion? Why not consider a Melvin Jones Fellowship. The cost is $1,000 and can be deposited with LCIF over time in your LCIF account. Many clubs in our district have funds on deposit; several with enough funds on deposit to name a Melvin Jones Fellow. To date, over 11 Lions have been named Melvin Jones Fellows in 18B. What an honor!

A little goes a long way. That $20 per year is less than $2 per month. Think what that $2 per month can do for so many people in our district, in Georgia, in the United States and the world.

Thank you!

ANNUAL REPORT DUE

The Annual Report or A-1 Report is due June 1. This is a summary to the DG and Lions Clubs International of the activities of each and every Lions Club.

The club secretary prepares the report. This made easier by summarizing the activities that the club has reported on the DG Monthly Activities report. There are no details asked, just a check list with a summary of hours, activities, and contributions.

Last month, a newsletter article gave a summary of what the Lions of 18B accomplished in 2002-2003. Let’s make 2003-04 a greater year! Let every club—all 50—complete and submit the A-1 Report by June 1!

Time is Running Out!

There are less than two months left to take advantage of the waiver of entrance fees for new lady Lions. Clubs should use this as a selling point when recruiting new Lions. Have some of you thought about asking your wives to be Lions? This is a good time to do so.

LCI has terminated all waiver of entrance fees as of June 20, 2004. This includes spouse’s fees, campus club fees, and women’s membership fees. Take advantage and invite that special person to be a Lion!

White Cane Day Participants

The following District 18B clubs participated in White Cane Day, according to the records of funds received by the Lighthouse.

Alma, Baxley, Bellville, Bloomingdale, Brunswick Gateway, Bulloch, Collins, Folkston, Garden City, Hinesville, Jekyll Island, Lyons, Pembroke, Savannah Hostess City, Savannah Port City, Statesboro Noon, Wilmington Island and Waycross.

If your club sponsored a White Cane Day and collected funds, please send them to the Lighthouse. Don’t forget to write WHITE CANE on your check!

As of May 12th the Lighthouse has received $123,560.37 state wide with $11,422.91 from District 18-B Clubs.
