Governor‘s Comments...

What is the difference in 62% and 38%?

As this is being written in early February, I have already been referred to as ‘almost Past District Governor Jack’, and have heard one Past District Governor say that after the District Convention, the year is over. Well I beg to differ! Not so much on a personal level, and I have taken no personal offence, but again, I beg to differ! There are at least four and one-half months left in this Lions year! About 38% of the amount of time in the year. If we take the position that after we do 62% of the work we have to do, then we may coast the rest of the time, would we get paid for the 38% of time left? Suppose that the workers building your house just build 62% of the rooms and roof. What if your doctor just gave you 62% of his attention and medical knowledge? Or your druggist gave you just 62% of your medication.

More importantly, suppose we just purchased 62% of a pair of needed glasses or 62% of a needed hearing aid. If we stop giving our Lions Club our time and attention in February, who is going to help those in need the 38% of the year that is left? If we stop being dedicated now, who will establish the new Clubs in March, April, May and June? Who will Charter the new Leo Clubs we need or recruit new members for the Georgia Lions All State Band or recognize Georgia Youth for the community service they have performed? At the first of February, if we quit doing what Lions have done for 84 years, who do we blame for declining numbers and declining service?

If we take a vacation from February until July, are we really the largest service organization in the world? Well we may be the largest, but we are not the most active and certainly not the best.

I hate to admit it, but I do have my share of ego, however the bottom line is not whose name is in front of “District Governor” but how much service we perform and how many people in need we help. Holding the idea that the Lions year is over at the end of the District Convention is wasting March, April, May and June when we could be helping people in need.

In District 18B our membership is on the rise. The number of Clubs participating in Zone, Region and District events and projects is increasing. Individual Clubs are finding new ways to raise funds and to help people. We have record numbers of Contributing Members in L C I F. We had hundreds of students participating in The Peace Poster Contest. More Lions are becoming interested in assuming leadership positions in order that we may continue to provide more service. District 18B is ‘ON A ROLL’! Keep up the good work! Don’t stop in February when we can do even more during the next four months. We still do not have a new Leo Club! We still do not have another new Club! We still do not have all Clubs contributing to all six State Lions Projects! We still do not have all Clubs participating in Liberty Day Georgia! We still do not have a Club sponsoring a program to recognize the Youth in their community. I’m not aware of a Lions Quest program in 18B. As good as we are, we could be even better! Use the last 38% of this Lions Year to have a NEW VISION and CREATE A NEW SUCCESS! You’ll be glad you did and the people you help will have a 100% improvement, not just a 62% improvement in their life. That’s the difference in 38% and 62%! Your 62% has already MADE ME PROUD TO BE A LION. However being Proud is like loving Grandchildren. There is always more love to give and I can be even PROUDER when we finish that other 38%!

Annual Lions Club Activities Report Results

The 2000-01 Annual Lions Club Activities Report (Form A-1) revealed important information about the accomplishments of Lions clubs worldwide. The results revealed that community, youth, and sight were the top three areas of Lions service; the average club donated $15,959 to community needs; and the average club volunteered 1572 hours of service. The results also indicate that the most frequently cited club activities were aiding the elderly (51% of clubs); eyeglass collection (41% of clubs); youth recreation/sports (35% of clubs); scholarships (35% of clubs); and community clean-ups (34% of clubs).

Form A-1 for 2001-02 is due at International Headquarters before July 15, 2002. All club secretaries are urged to submit the form electronically from the Member and Officer Reports/Directory Information section of the Lions Web site.

What is LCI Form A-1 ?

All Club Presidents and Secretaries know what The Annual Activities Report Form is. Don’t they? That is the report sent to The International Association of Lions Clubs ONE TIME EACH YEAR advising Lions Clubs International of all activities performed by the Club during the year. It is the ONE report of Activities required by LCI instead of the old activities report being filed each month. It is the easiest form of all to fill out. Just review your DG contest monthly activities reports and add them together. From the reports received, LCI compiles the amount of money donated by Lions Clubs, the kinds of service performed by Lions Clubs and the number of hours of service performed by Lions Clubs. That information is used to let us know how much we really serve AND to inform the world how much we serve.

The report just received shows that District 18B donated $83,175, an average of $5,198 per Club last Lions year, and provided 23,726 hours of service. We collected 11,162 pairs of glasses valued at $138,550. Does that make you proud to be a LION? It did me UNTIL I noted that ONLY 16 of 48 Clubs SUBMITTED THE REPORT!! I truly hope the report I received is in error, but will not bet on it! Of course I’m still proud to be a Lion in 18B because I know how much you gave in time and service. I wish the International Association knew! How about it Secretaries! Let’s send in the Annual Activities report this year!

Southeast Lions Leadership Institute

The Lions Leadership Institute focuses on building the skills of new and emerging Lion Leaders at the club and zone levels. The Institute is for Lions with 5 years or less in membership. The course is scheduled for April 17-20, 2002.

This year this valuable course will be held in Guntersville State Park, Guntersville, Alabama, just off Highway 431. The cost is $110.00 for each Lion who would like to attend. Our District at least needs two candidates to attend and we will not limit this just to two. The Institute will pay for your lodging and meals: breakfast, lunch and snacks on April 18, 19, and 20, and a banquet on April 20. There will be some cost for travel to the site and two meals not covered. Institute materials, including any notebooks and handouts used in the Institute activities, will be furnished. The District is willing to provide a $50.00 grant to offset the cost if need to allow attendance. For any additional information or and application form call Vice District Governor Jerry (964-4518) or E-mail at [email protected] .

L C I F REPORT

The LCIF Report of Contributions just received shows that through June 30, 2001 61% of the clubs in District 18B had at least one contributing member to LCIF with the total number of members standing at 131. The total amount of contributions through 6/30/2001 is reported at $7,130.00, that total includes some contributions toward Melvin Jones Fellowships. District 18B has, as of 6/31/2001, 159 Melvin Jones Fellows and there are four ‘paid for’ fellowships not yet named. In addition, there are 16 Clubs who have $800.00 or more credit toward Melvin Jones Fellowships. Any Club that wishes to have a Melvin Jones Fellowship recognized at the State Convention should act without delay! The plaques and paperwork take time to be processed and shipped.

The Board of Directors has recently decided that any contributions made in response to the Sept. 11, 2001 disaster made also be applied toward, or be used to award a Melvin Jones Fellowship, provided the amount was $100.00 or more and is or was made between 9/11/2001 and 3/31/2002. Contributions by a Club or an individual may be used in that manner. Contact LCIF and request that action be taken.

Please note that this report is only through 6/30/2001. There are many more Contributing Members not yet reported, but not all Clubs have responded.

It is not too late! District 18B can, and should, be a Leader in this project. DG Jack and VDG Jerry have Contributing Member Pins and receipts available. Remember the grant received by The Camp for the Blind! Multiple District 18 has received almost $900,000 in grants from LCIF! It is not too late to become a Contributing Member or to name Melvin Jones Fellows, but it is time to act!

2002 District Convention

The Hazlehurst Lions Club is the proud sponsors of the 2002 District 18-B Convention. It will be held February 22-23, 2002. All activities will be held at Outback Range and Recreation Center. Please mark this weekend on your calendar and make plans to attend. This will be an exciting event that you will not want to miss. Outback is located approximately seven (7) miles outside of Hazlehurst on Kirkland Still Road. Telephone (912) 375-0765

Events get underway on Friday evening, February 22nd with a dinner at 7:30 p.m. This dinner gives attendees an opportunity to meet in a casual setting to renew friendships, make new friends, and spend some time with our special guests, International Director Bob Miller and his wife, Lion Judy.

Saturday morning we will offer several tours to give you a taste of "country life" in the rural south. Activities at Outback will also be available for a nominal fee. Tours and activities will be suitable for your entire family.

Afternoon events will begin at 1:30 p.m. with several seminars: Vice District Governor Jerry Kaiser will ‘teach’ Lionism 101, a comprehensive orientation program for new Lions. Every Lion with less than three years tenure as a Lion who attends the seminar, and passes the test, will receive a District Governor’s Points Contest Voucher for 50 points which they may give to their Club. There is no limit on how many may attend from each Club. Fifty points will be awarded for each ‘new Lion’ who attends and passes the test.

There will be no points awarded for Lions with more than three years tenure, but I’ve heard that that it is surprising how much you can learn or remember when given the proper stimulus.

District Governor Jack will conduct a seminar about YOUTH PROGRAMS IN LIONISM TODAY. How many are they? What are they? How easy it is to become involved. How rewarding it is to become involved with the youth of today.

Hopefully we will have Lion Mark Miller and Lion Leslie Miller to discuss Leo Clubs and The Georgia Lions All State Band. Information regarding the International Program of Recognizing Youth who have performed community service will be available and discussed.

Every Club Officer who attends will receive a District Governor’s Points Contest Voucher for 25 points, which they may give to their Club. The Cabinet meeting will begin at 3:00 p.m. Convention activities will conclude with a banquet and address from I. D. Miller at 6:00 p.m.

The convention hotel will be McDonald's Lodge. Room rates will be $50.40 per night (including taxes). Please contact the hotel at (888) 844-8207 or (912)379-1770 to make your reservations. Be sure to let them know that you are part of the Lions Club Meeting. Reservations should be made no later than February 20th. For more information contact DG Jack Kennedy or Convention Chairman Lonnie Roberts, PCC, P.O. Box 1300, Hazlehurst, GA 31539. Telephone (912) 375-9800 H (912) 427-5816 W or e-mail [email protected]

Lion Jennifer Eisenhart, from the Savannah Port City Lions Club will provide supervised activities for children and grandchildren ages 3 to 12. If you were at the District Rally you will recall how much FUN the kids had with Lion Jennifer and her son, Lion-to-be Matthew.

For those clubs who have not mailed a check you have until the end of February to pay and get points in the District Governors point contest.

As a reminder to club presidents and treasurers I am listing those clubs who have not yet sent checks. Billing was sent out in December and if you have any questions feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] or call me at 912 233-0029.

Alamo, Brunswick-Gateway, Glennville, Kingsland, Milan, Richmond Hill, and Savannah Chatham South.

Your help in getting these dues paid will be appreciated.

Yours in Lionism,

New: Lioness Bridge Program

An exciting new development is giving current and former Lionesses worldwide a new opportunity to extend their service commitment. The Lioness Bridge Program, created in response to resolutions passed during the November 2001 meeting of the Lions Clubs International Board of Directors, makes it possible for Lionesses to honor and acknowledge their proud past while enjoying all the benefits, rights and privileges associated with Lions club membership. The program combines four elements: Use of "Lioness" in Club Name, Lioness Fee Waiver Program, Lioness Conversion Program and Special Lioness-Lions Pin.

For more information about this exciting new initiative, refer to the March Headquarters issue of THE LION Magazine; or contact the New Clubs and Marketing Department by phone at (630) 571-5466, ext. 305; by fax at (630) 571-1691; or by e-mail at [email protected].

Georgia Lions All State Band

Editor note—This article was received on January 28. Please note that by the time this newsletter is published it will be past the deadline for applications. As always please keep your Georgia Lions All State Band in your plans for the year. This activity help support our youth programs in the state. These young people that we help support will be future Lions. Please support this important cause of Lionism in Georgia.

I hope this finds you all doing well! I need your help -- the nomination information for the Lions All State Band has been mailed to all the band directors across the state, as well as to members of last year's band. Please alert the clubs in your area, via email, phone, your district's web site -- whatever means you can -- to see if they can contact the band directors in their respective areas and encourage them to nominate students for the band.

Even though we are not taking the trip to the International Convention this year, membership in this year's band will guarantee that the students will receive an invitation to participate in the band in 2003, when we will go to Denver.

Here are the basics…

Membership is open to any student in this year's grades 8-12. They are to fill out a nomination form (available from their band director, or by contacting me, Leslie Miller, 706.692.5913 or [email protected] ), and send it in -- postmark deadline February 10. The students will be notified of their selection by March 1. Every effort will be made to see that each school that sends in nominations will be represented in the band.

Please feel free to contact me about anything!

Thanks for all your help!!!

Leslie C. Miller

State Chair, Georgia Lions All State Band

Just two more things about the band -- the cost is $100 per student, and we take donations! Thanks -- LCM

LET’S TALK “PUBLIC AWARENESS”

Our International President slogan this year is “LIGHT THE LAMP TO SERVICE”. One of his paths is Public Awareness. Telling our story as Lions and what we do as Lions, and by informing the public of what we are all about as Lions and just maybe we can attract other members into our great association.

I want to tell you of a great successor story I was just involved in. My daughter in law had our grandson prematurely at home. Brenda’s son placed a 911 call, the local Fort Dodge Iowa Fire Emergency Reponses team was there within two minutes and had “Little Benjamin” on oxygen and thereby saved his life. He is presently in intensive care and has a long way to go before he goes home.

I wrote the president of the Fort Dodge Lions Club and asked them if they could in some small way honor these two firemen at one of there club meetings. Guess who is a lion in that club, the Fire Chief. That lions club along with the fire department did a follow up human-interest story with the local newspaper and television station. The newspaper article covered a total half page with pictures of both firemen and Benjamin; the Television report showed Benjamin and also interviews with Benjamin’s parents and once again both firemen. Additionally, that local Lions Club has asked me whenever I get back to Fort Dodge when Benjamin gets out of hospital to speak at one of there meetings. Let me ask you this, do you think the people in Fort Dodge know what that Lions Club is all about? If you don’t have your local newspaper, radio station and or television station as members of your local club you are truly missing a great opportunity to get tremendous mileage of your club’s activities.

Camp for the Blind

At the recent Camp for the Blind Directors' meeting, I was elected to the office of President for the two year period beginning July 1, 2002. I would like to thank the Lions of this District for their support of me, not only in this election but over the past. I feel very strongly that any accomplishments are a team effort.

The Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind is special to those of us in 18-B. It is a strong, vibrant and growing organization which has had excellent leadership from this district in the past. I would request your moral, physical, and financial support in the next two years to continue its growth in service to the blind youth of this state.

Again my thanks for your support.
